the infant mayor of westerhall bay

One night when Bean was about eight months old, we took the subway from my dad’s house in The Bronx to my friend’s apartment on the Upper East Side. He was still Snugli-bound back then, so it was an easy trip. Pleasant. Fun.
We had a good night. He found her stash of cat food and [...]

metaphysical do-overs

What if life were “choose your own adventure”? I loved those books, even after I got sophisticated enough to realize how trite they were. “Trite” isn’t precisely the word. What I mean is it became so obvious what you had to do in order to avoid getting one of the bad endings. It’s not unlike [...]

note to self

Remember that scene in Father of the Bride? Not the old one. The one with Steve Martin. Remember the scene in the grocery store? All he wants to do is buy some hot dogs and some buns, only hot dogs come in packages of eight and buns come in packages of twelve, and that’s just [...]

resolutions, briefly

I resolve to let go of negative feelings, situations and people. This includes my own sense of regret, circumstances I simply cannot improve more than I already have and people who, although they, like everyone, possess some good qualities, are emotional vampires who will suck me dry, but only if I let them.
I resolve to [...]

maria being maria

I posted this on Twitter the other day.
Obviously, it’s supposed to be funny. Well. I hope that’s obvious.
For a while now I’ve wanted to post something here about what Twitter and Tumblr mean to me. But it’s kind of difficult for me to explain that to people who don’t use the services themselves. This tweet? [...]

My name is María. I like wasabi, patronize bunny rabbits and think red wine really needs to stop pretending it's not purple.

I lived in Caribbean for four glorious years. My son - Joaquín the illustrious Bean - was born on the island of Grenada. He's beautiful, brilliant and has two birth certificates.

Now we're back in the land of snow and afternoon sunsets, and all the diet Coke and Thomas the Tank Engine in the world won't cushion the blow of such culture shock.

This is our story.
