a christmas eve story

Yesterday around 4PM I decided to have a little rest before I started on my cheesecake mission. I woke up an hour ago. Bean stood right in front of my face. “Good morning, Mommy,” he whispered. “Good morning, honey.” “I love you.” At this point it becomes obvious that we’ve been working on his waking-up-Mommy [...]

does this sound like karma or what?

I’m standing at the kitchen counter assembling a pizza. (Remember my pizza? My pizza rocks.) I’m totally engrossed in rolling out the dough when, out of the corner of my eye, I see something flying towards me. Whatever it is hits my toe – my littlest toe – and I’m all jumping around like Ow, [...]

the world’s best chocolate. let me show you it.

I’ve toured the Grenada Chocolate Factory. It’s a gorgeous little wooden building right on the edge of Grenada’s only rainforest. It’s painted with colors not unlike the those used on the wrapper, so it looks like something out of a badly colorized movie; somehow the tropical sunshine mutes the sight so it’s slightly shy of [...]

last night’s pizza

I made this – and four other – pizzas last night. Toppings included: my special tomato sauce with ground turkey, artichoke hearts, spinach, lean bacon, onions, garlic, green bell peppers and Edam cheese. I baked it in a cast iron skillet. This photograph hardly does it justice, but it does manage to convey the general [...]

blog action day lament

My back hurts. My back hurts in such a way that if I am sitting down, I cannot lower my chin without pain at the other end of my spine.  All because the other night, my son fell asleep in front of the TV.  I leaned down to pick him up, trying very hard not [...]

paella for 500!

My cousin just got back from Spain and posted this photo on her facebook page.  She was in Castell de Castells, her family home. This, ladies and gentlemen, is an authentic paella pan, and it feeds 500.  500! I have finally found the inspiration for my next major cooking project.

red, red wine

(I took this photo. I cropped out the people. What remains is the standard Sunday meal at my house in Grenada, eaten on the verandah overlooking Westerhall Bay… accompanied by chilled red wine.) Put your prejudices aside and really think about it, and you’ll have to agree. There are certain circumstances when it’s totally appropriate [...]

Grenada: where the water is always hot

So I’ve been back in Grenada almost a month now. I’m getting re-acclimated. I arrived at the peak of dry season, which may very well have been even dumber than moving back to the Northeastern U.S. in November, I don’t know. This week we finally saw some rain, which broke the oppressive heat. I’m tan [...]
