the world’s best chocolate. let me show you it.

chocolate

I’ve toured the Grenada Chocolate Factory. It’s a gorgeous little wooden building right on the edge of Grenada’s only rainforest. It’s painted with colors not unlike the those used on the wrapper, so it looks like something out of a badly colorized movie; somehow the tropical sunshine mutes the sight so it’s slightly shy of garish. It’s 100% solar-powered and run by an elderly Rastafarian. Nearly all of the cocoa grown in Grenada is exported to Belgium. What little bit stays in the country is made into chocolate (and assorted cocoa butter yumminess) at this one little factory.

(Sigh.)

My name is María. I like wasabi, patronize bunny rabbits and think red wine really needs to stop pretending it's not purple.

I lived in Caribbean for four glorious years. My son - Joaquín the illustrious Bean - was born on the island of Grenada. He's beautiful, brilliant and has two birth certificates.

Now we're back in the land of snow and afternoon sunsets, and all the diet Coke and Thomas the Tank Engine in the world won't cushion the blow of such culture shock.

This is our story.
