Letters from Grenada

in which i tell a story in pictures

1. Mommy has just received an email. There’s a photo in it. It’s from Grenada and it’s so lovely it makes her sad and homesick. There’s a tear on her face. Bean is about to jump on her head.

2. Bean climbs into Mommy’s lap. She stops crying.

3. Bean tries to tickle Mommy. She smiles. Sorta.

4. Mommy is smiling for realz. Bean is wondering why the frack they’re taking photos of this. Also, where’s his cookie?

I lived in Caribbean for four glorious years. My son - Joaquín the illustrious Bean - was born on the island of Grenada. He's beautiful, brilliant and has two birth certificates.

Now we're back in the land of snow and afternoon sunsets, and all the diet Coke and Thomas the Tank Engine in the world won't cushion the blow of such culture shock.

This is our story.
