the obamas: cutest couple in the universe
Seeing the way these two look at each other gets me all choked up. Nothing to hide, nothing but love. I wish they’d been around when I was a kid. Never underestimate the power of the positive relationship example, especially a high-profile public one.

Thanks to The Black Snob, who posted this yesterday as part of a series of photos of the Obamas and Bidens in Detroit. Thanks also to Afrobella, who recently wrote a beautiful and inspiring post about her parents’ marriage.

I find that picture oddly touching. Why is it so rare to see people in the public eye look at each other with real affection?
A couple of days ago I was out walking the dog with my parents- she’s 67, he’s 70- and noticed they were holding hands. As they usually do. And yet, it was still special enough for me to whisper to my 4-month old baby that she should look at that and realise how lucky she is…

@little_bounce – That is so sweet about your parents! I wish my son saw more of that stuff.
Three of my four grandparents were total American Gothic-style stoic non-emotives. I’m grateful that the fourth was Puerto Rican and that I grew up surrounded by Jews and Italians. As much as I hate to generalize, I find that the latter do tend to be quite a bit more demonstrative. Why do so many people (Americans??) seem to think affection/emotion is somehow embarrassing? My father’s mother could barely stand to let any of us grandchild hug her. “Gratuitous” hugging just wasn’t, to her, what one did. I think she secretly liked it, she just had to pretend otherwise. My grandchildren, on the other hand, are going to wonder why Granny M needs so many kisses.
