Over the weekend, I read two articles on political blogs that freaked me out so much I wonder if I should post about politics here at all.  There’s a lot of ugly stuff out there right now and I’m afraid.  Not afraid to take part, but afraid of what the future holds for my country if this is the best we can do in the way of political discourse.  And while I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t indulge in the occasional politic rant, that’s really not the point of this blog.  The point of this blog, believe it or not, it is to talk about my life as an expat in Grenada.

It’s in that spirit that I’m sharing this video.  It was produced by one.org, it’s about poverty, and as it features the voices of both Michelle Obama and Cindy McCain, I feel comfortable with both the message and its delivery.

In Grenada news, yesterday was the fourth anniversary of the passage of Hurricane Ivan.  YY commemorates that day here.  She links to the posts she wrote in 2005 about her personal experience of Ivan, as well as to some other survivors’ stories.

When I saw you the other day I told you I just “feel” the Dems are going to loose this election and I can tell that YOU see my feeling is not wrong. I'm not American but what happens there politically affects every single one of us living in this region – from tourism, to trade, to security, to endless, needless wars and suffering.

My name is María. I like wasabi, patronize bunny rabbits and think red wine really needs to stop pretending it's not purple.

I lived in Caribbean for four glorious years. My son - Joaquín the illustrious Bean - was born on the island of Grenada. He's beautiful, brilliant and has two birth certificates.

Now we're back in the land of snow and afternoon sunsets, and all the diet Coke and Thomas the Tank Engine in the world won't cushion the blow of such culture shock.

This is our story.
