paella for 500!

Paella: the real thing!

My cousin just got back from Spain and posted this photo on her facebook page.  She was in Castell de Castells, her family home.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is an authentic paella pan, and it feeds 500.  500!

I have finally found the inspiration for my next major cooking project.

Holy crap. There aren’t many times in life when you can say, “I have never seen anything like that.” That is totally, unbelievably awesome.

The thing I love about this is not simply the insane size, which is pretty cool. But it’s what the size indicates. That there are 500 people TO FEED. That it’s not unreasonable to have 500 hungry people in one place.

We live in what is conceivably the whitest city in Canada. Our family all lives between 200 and 3000 miles away. I couldn’t round up 500 people if I had a gun to my head, and I think that’s sad. It’s really cool to know that somewhere out there, massive crowds of people are chowing down on paella together.

Pelau has always reminded me of a cross between paella and really good Chinese fried rice. It’s my favorite Grenadian dish, especially when it’s made without bones!

I think many cultures have a variation on paella. the india biriyani comes to mind as well.
    but 500 people wow!

Amazing, could this be a record? Also, how did it taste?
I see a cross in the background, maybe this is how they get people to come to mass.

My name is María. I like wasabi, patronize bunny rabbits and think red wine really needs to stop pretending it's not purple.

I lived in Caribbean for four glorious years. My son - Joaquín the illustrious Bean - was born on the island of Grenada. He's beautiful, brilliant and has two birth certificates.

Now we're back in the land of snow and afternoon sunsets, and all the diet Coke and Thomas the Tank Engine in the world won't cushion the blow of such culture shock.

This is our story.
